Erik Dunmire

Since 2000, I have been a full-time instructor at College of Marin in Chemistry and Engineering. (My degrees are all in Chemical Engineering—B.S. from University of Florida, M.S. and Ph.D. from UC Davis.) During that time, I have taught most of the various chemistry and engineering courses offered by the college. I began teaching online shortly after I started at College of Marin, and in recent years have experimented with a variety of non-traditional teaching approaches, including asynchronous, synchronous, hybrid, flipped, etc. For me, the primary advantages of these approaches are the increased flexibility for students, and the student-centered nature of learning that makes it deeper, more personal, and more enduring.

Courses

CHEM 105 Chemistry in the Human Environment (online)
CHEM 131 General Chemistry I (online-hybrid)
CHEM 132 General Chemistry II (on-campus)
ENGG 150 Programming in MATLAB for Engineers (online)
ENGG 245 Engineering Materials Science (online-hybrid)

Tips for Success in my Courses

All of the courses that I teach, but especially the online and online-hybrid classes, require that students take an active role in their learning, and demonstrate initiative and self-discipline in completing assignments. Students are required to complete tasks and submit assignments on a weekly basis. Students are also often expected to engage with other students in the class via discussions and group assignments.
