Hello! I'm Dave Patterson, a librarian at College of Marin since 2013. After attending community college in San Mateo, I transferred to UC Berkeley, where I earned a Bachelor’s degree in English. I then attended UC Berkeley’s School of Education and began teaching. I have a master's degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Alabama and a Ph.D. in Education from UC Berkeley’s School of Education, where I wrote my dissertation, Becoming Researchers: Community College ESL Students, Information Literacy, and the Library.
I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines and have taught in Budapest, Hungary, on the border between Arizona and Mexico, and in Alabama. I was a founding trustee of Homework Central, an afterschool homework program for low-income children in San Mateo sponsored by the Peninsula Interfaith Alliance. I interned at Stanford University Library and then worked for almost ten years at Cañada Community College in Redwood City. I'm gay. My husband immigrated to the United States from Pakistan.
Some of my favorite programs at the College of Marin: EOPS, Umoja, Puente, MAPS, SAS, and COMPASS. I love to work with all students, but I have a special place in my heart for students who love to read and write, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer students, ESL students, and undocumented students. I co-chair COMmon Read, College of Marin's community reading program. My favorite authors: Jane Austen, Cornel West, Ann Patchett, Paolo Freire, Henry James, John Irving, Isabel Allende, PG Wodehouse, Armistead Maupin, and David Mitchell.
